NovaSure® Endometrial Ablation: Procedure Overview

NovaSure® is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat heavy menstrual bleeding in women who have completed childbearing. It works by removing the lining of the uterus (endometrium), which is responsible for menstrual bleeding.

The procedure is typically performed in-office or as an outpatient, takes only a few minutes, and does not require incisions. Many patients experience significantly lighter periods afterward, and some stop having periods altogether.

NovaSure is not a form of birth control and is not recommended for women who wish to become pregnant in the future.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is NovaSure used for?

NovaSure is used to treat abnormally heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding when medications or other treatments have not been effective.

How does the NovaSure procedure work?

The procedure uses a small device that delivers controlled energy to the uterine lining. This permanently removes the lining to reduce or stop menstrual bleeding. The treatment itself typically takes about 90 seconds.

Who is a good candidate for NovaSure?

You may be a good candidate if you:

  • Have heavy menstrual bleeding that interferes with daily life
  • Do not plan to have future pregnancies
  • Have a normal uterus or small fibroids
  • Have not found relief with medication

Your provider will determine if NovaSure is right for you after an exam and possible imaging or biopsy.

How long does the procedure take?

The entire appointment usually lasts less than 30 minutes, with the actual treatment taking only a few minutes.

Is anesthesia required?

NovaSure can be performed with local anesthesia, oral medication, or IV sedation, depending on your provider’s recommendation and your comfort level.

What is recovery like?

Most patients return to normal activities within 1–2 days. Mild cramping, watery or bloody discharge, and fatigue are common for a short time after the procedure.

When will I see results?

Many patients notice lighter periods within the first few cycles. Results continue to improve over time. Some women stop having periods altogether, while others have lighter, more manageable cycles.

Will I still need birth control after NovaSure?

Yes. Pregnancy is unlikely but still possible and can be dangerous after endometrial ablation. Reliable birth control is recommended unless you have had permanent sterilization.

Are there risks or side effects?

NovaSure is considered safe, but like any medical procedure, it carries some risks, including:

  • Infection
  • Uterine injury
  • Ongoing bleeding

Your provider will review risks and benefits with you in detail.

Is NovaSure the same as a hysterectomy?

No. NovaSure is less invasive, does not remove the uterus, and has a much shorter recovery time than hysterectomy.

How effective is NovaSure?

Clinical studies show that the majority of patients experience significant reduction in bleeding, with high satisfaction rates.

Is NovaSure covered by insurance?

In many cases, yes — especially when heavy menstrual bleeding is affecting quality of life. Coverage varies by plan, and our office can help verify benefits.
