Breast Ultrasound: Procedure Overview

A breast ultrasound is a safe, painless imaging test that uses sound waves to create pictures of the breast tissue. It is commonly used to evaluate a breast lump, pain, or area of concern found during a physical exam or on a mammogram.

Breast ultrasound does not use radiation and is especially helpful for women with dense breast tissue, those who are pregnant or breastfeeding, or when further evaluation is needed after a mammogram. It may be performed as a diagnostic exam or to guide procedures such as a breast biopsy.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is a breast ultrasound used for?

Breast ultrasound is used to:

  • Evaluate a breast lump or area of tenderness
  • Distinguish between a fluid-filled cyst and a solid mass
  • Further examine an abnormal mammogram finding
  • Guide needle placement during a breast biopsy
Is a breast ultrasound the same as a mammogram?

No. A mammogram uses low-dose X-rays, while ultrasound uses sound waves. Ultrasound does not replace a mammogram but is often used in combination with one for more detailed evaluation.

Who may need a breast ultrasound?

You may be recommended a breast ultrasound if you:

  • Have dense breast tissue
  • Feel a lump or experience breast pain
  • Have an abnormal mammogram result
  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding

Need follow-up imaging

How is the procedure performed?

During the exam:

  1. You will lie comfortably on an exam table
  2. A warm gel is applied to the breast
  3. A handheld device (transducer) is moved over the skin
  4. Images appear on a screen in real time

The exam typically takes 15–30 minutes.

Is a breast ultrasound painful?

No. The procedure is painless, though you may feel slight pressure from the transducer.

Do I need to prepare for a breast ultrasound?

No special preparation is required. You may eat, drink, and take medications as usual.

Does a breast ultrasound use radiation?

No. Ultrasound uses sound waves and involves no radiation exposure.

When will I get my results?

Results are typically reviewed by a radiologist and shared with your provider. Many patients receive results within a few days, depending on the practice.

Can a breast ultrasound detect cancer?

Breast ultrasound can identify suspicious findings, but it cannot diagnose cancer on its own. If an abnormality is seen, additional imaging or a biopsy may be recommended.

Is breast ultrasound safe during pregnancy?

Yes. Breast ultrasound is considered very safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Is breast ultrasound covered by insurance?

In many cases, yes — especially when ordered for a medical concern or follow-up. Coverage varies by plan, and our office can help verify your benefits.

What happens if something abnormal is found?

If an abnormality is detected, your provider may recommend:

  • Additional imaging
  • Short-term follow-up ultrasound
  • A biopsy for further evaluation

Your provider will discuss next steps and answer any questions.
